The History of Sports channels.

The first sports channel was first broadcasted in 1979, and first aired almost two years earlier in 1977, from the SportsChannel Networks. A Columbia-Princeton baseball game at Baker Field was the first sporting event ever broadcasted on TV in 1939 by the National Broadcasting company.

The United Kingdom’s first TV channel to cover sports was Screensport which launched on the 29th of March 1980. The first sport to be aired on this channel was greyhound racing on the 31st of August 1980.

Sky Sports, a popular sports channel was founded on the 25th of March 1990, and remains one of the most popular sports channels in the UK. On 19 October 1946, the first live televised football match was broadcast by the BBC from Barnet's home ground Underhill.

One of the most popular sports shown on TV is the FIFA world cup, as well as The Olympic Games.

Sky Sports-

Last year Sky Sports gained an average of 14 million viewers, and with 23 million subscribed around the world. The cost of subscription for Sky Sports is £33.99 per month, around £407.88 each year. Last year Sky Sports made a profit of approximately 1.3 billion in US dollars. Sky sports shows coverage of different types of sport and has channels dedicated to at least one sport, for example cricket, football, and the premier league all have their own channels.

 

BT Sport-

BT Sport was first broadcasted on the 1st of August 2013, and is co-owned by BT, Warner Bros and Discovery Sports Europe. It provides coverage of sport, and costs £54.99 each month for 24 months, however after 24 months (2 years) the price increases to £66.74 each month. The subscription costs £659.88 each year for the first two years before increasing to £800.88 each year after the first two years. Which is £252 more expensive than sky sports for the first two years, before becoming £393 more expensive after the discounted 24 months. BT Sport has an average of 4 million subscriptions across the United Kingdom.

 

Other media sources of finance-

Sky Sports and NBC both own their own YouTube channels, highlighting the best from sporting events. One channel is targeted at one audience, one being for fans of Football and the other being for fans of American Football. Both channels generate profits from ad revenue, as many content creators receive this.

Many sports channels also have other Social Media accounts on different websites and apps, for example Twitter, Instagram or Facebook Live. This creates publicity about upcoming events as well as advertising without spending money, allowing the company to generate more profits.

 

The Popularity of Sports Channels-

The popularity of Sports Channels has increased since their introduction to TV in the late 70’s. There are now many different channels, some dedicated to coverage of one specific sport, and some teams have their own TV channels that showcase their sport. These include: LFC TV (Liverpool Football Club Television), which shows coverage of Liverpool matches, as well as MUTV (Manchester United Television), which shows coverage of Manchester United matches.
